Petrichor adalah salah satu bau alami yang tercium saat hujan turun membasahi tanah yang kering. Pada tahun 1964, saintis Australia, Isabel Joy Bear dan R. G. Thomas, melakukan penelitian mengenai aroma hujan dan mempublikasikannnya di jurnal Nature, “Nature of Agrillaceous Odor.” Isabel dan Thomas menciptakan istilah petrichor (Yunani, petra: batu, ichor: darah para dewa) untuk menjelaskan fenomena tersebut.
Petrichor sebenarnya disebabkan oleh beberapa hal.
Namun, yang paling berkontribusi terhadap munculnya petrichor ada dua hal. Pertama, minyak yang menguap dari tumbuhan. Tumbuhan mengeluarkan sejenis minyak yang mudah menguap yang kemudian terkumpul di berbagai permukaan, seperti misalnya bebatuan. Minyak tersebut bereaksi dengan tetesan air hujan dan dilepaskan sebagai gas ke udara. Kedua, geosmin yang dilepaskan oleh mikroba. Geosmin adalah senyawa organik yang dihasilkan oleh beberapa mikroba yang hidup di tanah, air tawar, dan air laut, seperti cyanobacteria dan actinobacteria. Geosmin dilepaskan ketika mikroba mati, dan saat terkena terpaan air hujan, geosmin terangkat ke udara dan terciptalah aerosol partikel geosmin dalam udara. Geosmin juga penyebab mengapa ikan air tawar suka berbau tanah.

Lalu, mengapa hal tersebut bisa menimbulkan sensasi yang berbeda?
Pada saat musim kering, tumbuh-tumbuhan tertentu mensekresikan sejenis minyak aromatik ke dalam tanah sebagai upaya adaptif terhadap lingkungan yang relatif kering, kemudian pada saat hujan, senyawa-senyawa ini naik ke udara.

Senyawa kimia yang dihasilkan oleh tumbuh-tumbuhan tersebut kemudian bercampur dengan geosmin. Geosmin adalah zat kimia yang dihasilkan oleh Actinomycetes (bakteri berfilamen) pada saat pembentukan spora, zat ini naik ke udara akibat tekanan hujan.

Setelah itu senyawa aromatik dan geosmin berbaur dengan molekul ozon. Ozon terdiri dari tiga unsur oksigen yang saling berikatan, terbentuk dari oksigen dan senyawa nitrogen yang “dipecah” oleh petir yang kemudian bereaksi membentuk ozon. Bau ozon mirip atau mengingatkan kita pada bau senyawa klorin yang biasanya digunakan dalam kolam renang.

Selain ketiga penjelasan di atas, ada juga yang menyebutkan bahwa air hujan yang bersifat asam menimbulkan atau memicu reaksi-reaksi kimia di permukaan tanah yang terdiri dari berbagai komponen (organik dan anorganik) yang menghasilkan senyawa-senyawa aromatik.

Senyawa yang dihasilkan tersebut ternyata memiliki efek aroma-terapi yang memberi kesan tenang, nyaman, serta memberi inspirasi bagi yang menciumnya. Akan tetapi beberapa peneliti menemukan bahwa aroma hujan yang dirasakan oleh tiap orang berbeda-beda. Hal ini mungkin dipengaruhi suasana hati penikmat hujan itu sendiri.

Dan tanpa bisa mendapatkan bukti ilmiah, para ilmuan hanya bisa menyimpulkan “Di dalam hujan, ada lagu yang hanya bisa didengar oleh mereka yg rindu”. Dan pada titik ini, para ilmuan meyakini bahwa manusia biasanya mendapatkan inspirasi..

jangan bunuh rasa cinta itu tapi jaga dan kelola. sebab cinta diberikan Allah kepada kita sebagai sumber terbesar kekuatan kita.
